Gearing Up for 5G

Losing network coverage in an office building or on a train traveling at high speeds is a frequent occurrence for many of us—but according to telecommunications industry executive Jim Ludington, that’s all about to change. With the advent of 5G small cell technology, the cellular future looks bright. It’s “Wi-Fi that goes everywhere,” he tells GLG. In this video, Jim Ludington discusses new technologies affecting the telecommunications and cable space, the Internet of things, and our ever-growing appetite for speed.

Jim Ludington spent more than three decades at Time Warner Cable (now Spectrum), working his way up to Senior Vice President of Technology for Business Operations. In this role, he was responsible for technology and IT budget management, capital planning, the program management office, and network performance management metrics. Ludington assumed this role in early 2014 after leading TWC’s merger integration efforts with Comcast for technology, network operations, and IT functions. Prior to this, Ludington was EVP/SVP of National Network Operations, where much of TWC’s customer-facing technology was tested, deployed, and operated. In 1996, Ludington left TWC briefly to start two businesses. He founded Internetwork Integration, Inc. (INT2), a network services and systems integration company for the cable industry, providing voice, video, data installation, and network construction services. Ludington also formed Tradewinds Television, LLC, a cable company that built and operated video and high-speed data service in multiple dwelling units before returning to TWC in 2003. Ludington remains an active member of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE), and in 2012, he was named a Cable TV Pioneer. Ludington is currently working on a new pizza venture called Serious Dough.
